della-Porta design Ltd  – specialists in Japanese and Contemporary bespoke furniture

(established in 1996 by Joe della-Porta)

Our furniture design is really a story of ‘East meets West’.  I am totally inspired by the refinement of Japanese design and craftsmanship and the unique way this can fuse with Western culture.  These qualities shine through each project– which is then brought further to life by adding a reflection of our client’s personality.

I have always admired the discipline and simplicity of Japanese art and design.  So,  after training as a carpenter and joiner in London, I travelled to Japan to study the art of traditional Japanese house  building.  My story really started here thanks to a most amazing “Toryo” (Master), Mr Kobayashi.  “Kobayashi san”  opened the secretive world of the “Daikusan” (Carpenter) to me and taught me many skills unique to the much  respected Japanese carpenter.  On returning to England, I was awarded a place to study at the world-renowned Parnham College, run by John Makepeace.  Ater graduating in 1996, I established “della-Porta design”.

The ever changing market, influenced by trends, has enabled us to create a wide portfolio of projects – ranging from  individual pieces of free-standing furniture such as cabinets, tables and bookcases, to grander projects of ‘fitted’  items, such as hand-made wardrobes and kitchens, and ultimately, refurbishments including staircases.  We work  mainly with private clients and Architects and occasionally, Interior Designers, to design solutions that really suit their lifestyle – managing the entire project if required.  Here again, we always strive to create beautiful signature pieces that stand out from the crowd and tell their own story…
